although, from the point of view of someone who thinks that sometimes you have to stir shit up before change happens, i have to say that i love the picture with the headline. because you know that there were some people there who were just that happy and relieved about the decision to reject same gender marriage.

ha-- half an hour after i captured this, it's now a different picture online.

The photo is sort of ridiculous, but I appreciated reading the caption:
From left, Tricia Dykers Koenig of Cleveland Heights; Ohio, Roger Wilson of Forest Park, Ill.; Rev. Laurie Kraus of Key Biscayne, Fla.; and Michele Ready of South Miami, Fla., were elated after the Presbyterian leadership passed the gay clergy measure.
Apparently queers can be noncelibate and clergy, but they can't get married. This seems... very counterintuitive. I imagine it will change with time.
(Oh. I got the caption from here (http://www.startribune.com/lifestyle/faith/98060119.html?elr=KArks:DCiU1OiP:DiiUiD3aPc:_Yyc:aUHDYaGEP7eyckcUX).)

i was less pleased to read that this is the fourth time they've passed the gay clergy resolution, but that it keeps not getting ratified.

no cookie for them.

I was totally confused because, based on the picture, in my area those people would all be lesbian priests. Maybe Presbyterians look different.

How about a cookie that tastes like chalk?

I misread the subhead initially as, "But Presbyterian leaders meeting in Minneapolis said yes to gay and lesbian orgy," and is just seemed so damned typical.

Ooh, yes. Or one of those nasty cookies from the Harry Potter books, you know, one that makes you throw up or something.

I think the picture is of the lesbian clergy. Or the people who are a fan of lesbian clergy, anyway. The picture wasn't a good match for the headline IMO (which, you know, for me, would have had people crying, yelling, or holding their heads)...

Or they have to eat very sweet cookies that they like until they hate them!

The thing that grabbed me is that they didn't ratify a position that removed the threat of punishment from clergy who perform same-sex marriages ... in states where it is legal. That shouldn't have been a hard decision at all.

I don't know. I see the struggles more locally. My minister (who is a strong voice for progress) recognizes that were the church to split in half over this issue that one of the offshoots would be more progressive than the UCC and would give the UU a run for its money. At the same time, it would be half the size of a denomination that has already lost half of its size, and so he chooses the slow and painful process of reaching consensus with the thick-headed. It's aggravating, and I'm sorry that it makes us look even less worthy than a denomination that isn't even having the discussion.

Oh, the United Methodists go through this every two years at Synod too. "We can keep abortion, or we can take on the gays."

This same picture being used for "before the vote" coverage, hence the weirdness.
