so. if i keep getting telemarketing calls from the same company, they refuse to honor my requests to put me on their do not call list, and i just got called a dumb bitch when i asked to speak to a supervisor, any thoughts about who a person could mention that to?

eta: i did realize that this number was not on the do not call registry, and now it is. so, in about a month i will hopefully no longer get called every few days by these cretins.

Me, and I will go kick their asses.

Hmm. Probably somebody else, too, though.

The FCC.

If you've told them to stop calling you, they should have stopped regardless of whether you're on the national list -- they have an obligation to put you on their own do-not-call list anyway.

I second that. If they do not stop calling you, the FCC will fine them. That'll stop 'em!

Better Business Bureau, for one. Do you know in what state the company is based?

In addition to the Better Business Bureau and the FCC, I like http://whocalled.us/ as well as the idea of calling your local telephone company to see about blocking.

Your state attorney general's office.

And every company that does telemarketing is required to maintain its own do-not-call list, and add people on request. They are also required to include all numbers on the national registry on their do-not-call lists.

That is, you can tell a given company to put you on their DNC list without being on the national registry: it's possible that you might, or someone might, be happy to get calls from most companies, but want not to be called by the local double-glazing firm or newspaper deliverers.

Do also let us know what the company is, so if we ever had the slightest thought about buying something from it, we could put that thought out of our head.

I've got some credit card (scam?) company that keeps calling, despite my number being on the do not call list, and despite my repeatedly (five times? ten?) asking them to put me on their do not call list. They called a few days ago, and I said "What is the name of your company?" (*click*)

I guess next time I should get the phone company to track who it is, and then get the FCC after them. Or something. They've been doing it for over a year, and seem pretty hard to deter, despite laws and regulations and potential fines.

Does the caller ID actually register a number that they are calling from?

Not providing a real caller id is also illegal. Also, depending on your state laws, you may be able to sue them in small claims court. IANAL.

If you can't find them, it's hard to sue them.

Contact the company. I am sure there is a website or something for them somewhere. Call and ask to speak to a manager. This happened to me about 10 years ago or so. I kept getting calls from Discover card. As in multiple calls a day and they never took me off their list. My dad had a card so I swiped it, called the number on the back and then reamed out a manager and told her flat out I would NEVER get a Discover card because of the company's rude behavior. I've never been contacted by Discover again nor have I ever gotten a card. Good luck!

oh man....that is so shady. well, when they call again, harass them instead for a name. It will drive the telemarketer bonkers.

If they're calling repeatedly and won't identify themselves, I'd try treating them like a harassing phone call. There's a star-something-something you can dial to tell the phone system to log tracing info for the last call; after you have a couple of these, the telco or the police can look at the log... of course this only works if the telco/police think it's important enough to look into.

If they call again, now that you're on the national DNC list (ha! that's sort of funny), you can report them through the www.donotcall.gov Web site.

If they use profanity, that's actually illegal. Attorney General is probably who you should contact re that, though lots of folks have pointed out other useful entities.
