Gay ministers will be allowed to lead parishes, representatives of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) voted today in Minneapolis.

for those of you not familiar with the lutheran church in its many weirdo varieties, the elca is the "mainstream" lutheran church. (there are also the missouri synod and the wisconsin synod, aka six miles to right of attila the hun and six miles farther right than that. as well as many smaller sects.)

i've been waiting for them to do this for twenty years, so i'm not in line to give them a cookie. but i am happy they've done this.

Is the MO synod as wacky as the WI one? Remember, this is from a lapsed Catholic who has trouble telling the types of Protestants apart at times.

missouri synod is slightly less wacky. slightly. they are between elca and wisconsin synod, and are currently debating whether or not women should be allowed to be pastors.

my former inlaws are missouri synod pastors. by which i mean all the men except my ex and his brother are pastors and the women run the church/play piano/sing/do childcare during services/work at the mo synod schools.

So are most of the Lutherans I hear about on Prairie Home Companion ELCA? My neighbors down the street go to a Missouri Synod church.

Most Lutherans are ELCA.

I grew up Missouri Synod and found out TODAY that Missouri Synod granted women the right to vote in church matters the year after I was born.

If women become (Missouri Synod) ministers my dad will probably have to leave the church, as to him that means it is no longer a Lutheran church (he's actually a super nice person and fully supports ME in no longer being Lutheran).
