Is The Closer a better show? I haven't seen Rizzoli and Isles yet. But the main character of The Closer kept annoying the living shit out of me. It was like the writers felt like they had to keep apologizing for having a girrrrrullll in the main role. "We're so sorry! We'll make her eat junk food all the time! We'll make her really absent-minded! Please, please forgive her for being female and professionally competent!" Maybe that's not how other people saw her, but I did, so I quit watching after one season.
the plots are better on the closer (imho) and i really like the way she does the "i'm such a little southern flower hee hee" in the interrogation room and then skewers their ass to the wall because she's brilliant and is using femininity as a weapon. (i'm not sure that's the way the writers think about it, but it is how i think about it. so.)
r&i is on their first season, and it's radically different from the books. not quite _bones_ level look it's angel in the daylight that character isn't even in the books wtf level, but pretty different. but the two characters are both female, female in hard professions to be female in, and front and center. it's a cheesy cop buddy show where the two buddies happen to be straight women.
i'm not saying it couldn't be done better. because how about a non-cheesy cop buddy show? i'd be for that!
I'd love a cheesy cop buddy show where the characters were a gay man and a lesbian. Except it would be a cop show and I'd probably have to skip it. I used to love cop shows.
Angie Harmon (who plays Rizzoli) is also a big-time Republican. Don't remember why I know that; it just makes me want to stop learning anything about people involved in show business.
