"SF3 has withdrawn the invitation to Elizabeth Moon to attend WisCon 35 as guest of honor."

from the lj/dw community posts,

"The WisCon committee chairs are appointed by the SF3 president.
SF3 is the parent 501k corporation that contains WisCon as one of its committees.
For reasons of legal liability, the SF3 executive board takes responsibility for actions like this one.
If you have comments about this decision, we ask that you direct them to sf3info at wiscon dot info. These responses will be read by the SF3 President and the SF3 Corresponding Secretary."

Minor point: the LJ/DW entries have been edited to note that SF3 is, in fact, a 501(c)(3) corporation. (Methinks whoever was typing was thinking of their 401(k) at the time....)

I actually have a 403(b)! But....yes. Mostly the problem is that I don't know what any of those things mean, ;_;

Just to exercise my Male Answer Syndrome, they're all chapters and sections of the U.S. Tax Code. 401(k) and 403(b) cover retirement accounts and 501(c)(3) describes tax-exempt non-profit organizations. Just to round out the numbers, 529's are college savings accounts.

Knowing is half the battle! ^_^

A 403(b) is what you get instead of a 401(k) when you work for a 501(c)(3). </dork>

Thank you. I can't imagine this was anything other than incredibly difficult to deal with. Hope you are doing okay. *hugs*

I agree. This has always struck me as a progressive convention's version of the Kobayashi Maru. In that metaphor, I suppose Captain Kirk's solution would have been to hack into Elizabeth Moon's LiveJournal account and write a heartfelt apology under her name.

For what it's worth, I'd have made the same decision WisCon did three weeks ago and I'd have made the same decision SF3 did yesterday, but I respect that both are agonizing choices with sensible points on both sides. If nothing else, this is the decision that lets you move forward and focus on things that are more pleasant, and I hope that thought brings you comfort.
